The Norwegian type-anaphor det
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper gives a description of the Norwegian type anaphor det ('that') and proposes a formal representation of it in the HPSG framework. This identity-of-sense anaphor is interpreted as referring to a (new) set of entities of the same type as its antecedent. Its antecedent has to be either indefinite or a definite NP that is likely to introduce a brand new discourse referent. Whereas the type anaphor is neuter and singular w.r.t. sentence-internal agreement, it is lexically underspecified for agreement features that are relevant for sentence-external phenomena, and rather shares values for person, number, and gender with its antecedent. Furthermore, the type anaphor det only appears in positions where indefinite determinerless phrases are licensed. In addition, its distribution is sensitive to discourse related restrictions common to anaphora in general. This complexity of restrictions makes HPSG a suitable formal framework, as it is a theory that concerns all linguistic aspects of a sign. But also in HPSG the type anaphor det represents a challenge. The main problem is that it shares with its antecedent the relations that the antecedent introduces, but not the index. This is hard to express in a satisfying way in standard HPSG.

Detecting reference chains in Norwegian
This article describes a memory-based mechanism for anaphora resolution and coreference. A program labels the words in the text with part-ofspeech tags, functional roles, and lemma forms. This information is used for generating a representation of each anaphor and antecedent candidate. Each potential anaphorantecedent pair has a match vector calculated, which is used to select similar cases fro...
متن کاملNorwegian Object Shift as IP-internal topicalization
In this paper we discuss the phenomenon of Object Shift in Norwegian, and we show that this operation is more complex and discourse related than what has traditionally been assumed. We argue that Object Shift cannot be accounted for in a purely prosodic approach. Rather, we demonstrate that a common denominator for all objects undergoing Object Shift is that they are topics. We thus propose tha...
متن کاملNorwegian Intonation and the Resolution of Concessive Anaphora
The present paper reports on a listening comprehension test in which the subjects’ task was to decide whether they felt there was an intended causal relation or an intended concessive relation between the conditional clause proposition and the main clause proposition expressed in a set of Norwegian spoken conditionals. In order to do that they had to select a context that would enable them to r...
متن کاملA High-Performance Coreference Resolution System using a Constraint-based Multi-Agent Strategy
This paper presents a constraint-based multiagent strategy to coreference resolution of general noun phrases in unrestricted English text. For a given anaphor and all the preceding referring expressions as the antecedent candidates, a common constraint agent is first presented to filter out invalid antecedent candidates using various kinds of general knowledge. Then, according to the type of th...
متن کاملThe Effect of Anaphor and Ellipsis Resolution on Proximity Searching in a Text Database
So far, methods for ellipsis and anaphor resolution have been developed and the effects of anaphor resolution have been analyzed in the context of statistical information retrieval (IR) of scientific abstracts. No significant improvement has been observed. In this study, the effects of ellipsis and anaphor resolution on proximity searching in a full text database are analyzed. Anaphora and elli...
